DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the ninth annual Big Island & Back! 10K Paddle on Saturday\, Aug. 13\, 2022 starting at 9 am. \nTune up your canoe\, kayak\, or paddleboard and head on over to Excelsior on Saturday\, Aug. 13\, for a friendly race out around Big Island and back. We start near the swim area at Excelsior Beach Park. Our goal is to get paddlers of all ages and skill levels out on Lake Minnetonka for a great community summer event and raise money for a couple of worthy causes. \nDon’t miss the after-party at Excelsior Brewing Company beginning at 11 am for refreshments from Joey Nova’s and\, of course\, beer! Awards and door prizes at around noon. DESCRIPTION:“Why is it raining plastics?”\nJoin Dr. Janice Brahney over the lunch hour on Wednesday\, April 13\, for a virtual talk on microplastics. Brahney  is an associate professor at Utah State University. She received her doctorate in environmental biogeochemistry from the University of Colorado\, Boulder\, and holds a master’s degree in earth science and a bachelor’s degree in environmental science\, both from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby\, Canada. \nHer research sits at the intersection of several critical zone disciplines and includes three primary themes: \n\nThe atmosphere as a vector for material transport to aquatic ecosystems\,\nClimate change effects in mountain environments\, and\nThe cause\, effect\, and mitigation of water quality impairment.\n\nMuch of Brahney’s work has produced results with far-reaching implications for policy\, land-use regulation\, and ecosystem monitoring. \nRegister and get more info on the event’s main page

DESCRIPTION:Indigenous participation in Great Lakes governance: an environmental justice perspective\nOur speaker\, Deborah McGregor\, holds a doctorate in forestry from the University of Toronto\, as well as a master’s degree in environmental studies from York University and a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Toronto. \nCurrently at York University in Ontario\, McGregor is joint faculty with the Osgoode Hall Law and Environmental Studies & Urban Change and is associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Justice. \nHer research has focused on Indigenous knowledge systems and their various applications in diverse contexts including environmental and water governance\, environmental justice\, health and environment\, climate change and Indigenous legal traditions.
