Work for Water Art and Design Contest

 

The Work for Water Art and Design Contest builds on the last seven years of successful Water is Life Art Contests.  The Work for Water Art and Design Contest will not only highlight the importance of water in our lives, but also educate and provoke citizens to take simple steps to protect our waters. Freshwater Society, in collaboration with Synergy and Leadership Exchange and Minnesota Service Cooperatives, ask students to create graphic design, short videos, photos, paintings, drawings, etc. to be used as messaging tools to engage Minnesotans in protecting water.  They will become tools inspiring change!

Meet the six Minnesota high school students who won the 2011 Freshwater Society art contest, and view their video, paintings and sculpture. The winners were announced on May 4, 2011, at a reception at the Gray Freshwater Center in Excelsior.

2009 art contest winners chosen

Six high school students won $500 scholarships Wednesday, May 6, 2009, in the Freshwater Society’s fifth annual Water is Life art contest.

The six were chosen from among 29 semi-finalists from across Minnesota. The winners were:

• Alixandra Biwer, Kasson-Mantorville High School
• Quanzakari DeChiara-Crillion, Perpich Center for Arts Education
• Bradley Johnson, Le Sueur-Henderson High School
• Luke Muyskens, School of Environmental Studies
• Sarah Olson, Eden Prairie High School
• Meghan Reistad, Elk River High School

Each semi-finalist received a $100 prize.

The high school artists submitted entries that included photography, sculpture, painting and video. Each artist accompanied his or her artwork with a statement reflecting the value of water or the threats it faces in today’s world.

The six winners were announced in a ceremony at the Gray Freshwater Center in Excelsior. Sandy Spieler, artistic director of the In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, was the keynote speaker. Spieler talked about her theatre’s many productions that have focused on themes related to water.

The Freshwater Society sponsors the art show in cooperation with service cooperatives from across Minnesota.

Twin Cities art contest semi-finalists chosen

Five Twin Cities students have been chosen as semi-finalists in the Freshwater Society’s Water is Life art contest.

The four, who were chosen Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in a competition held in cooperation with the Metro Education Cooperative Service Unit, are:

* Quanzakari DeChiara-Crillion, a student at the Perpich Center for Arts Education.
* Abbey Dooner, a student at Chaska High School.
* Colette Moran, also a student at Chaska High School.
* Luke Muyskens, a student at the School of Environmental Studies.
* Sarah Olson, a student at Eden Prairie High School.

The five will advance to a statewide competition. Winners, who will receive $500 scholarships, will be announced May 6 at the Gray Freshwater Center, home to the Freshwater Society, in Excelsior.

The art contest encourages students to create works that reflect the relationship of water to art, its value and the threats it faces.

South Central art semi-finalists chosen
Two students from Le Sueur-Henderson High School and two from Maple River High School were selected Wednesday, April 15, as semi-finalists in the Freshwater Society’s 2009 Water is Life art contest.

The semi-finalists, chosen in a regional completion conducted in partnership with the South Central Service Cooperative in Mankato, are:

* Megan Chilman, a student at Le Sueur-Henderson High School.
* Bradley Johnson, a student at Le Sueur Henderson High School.
* Hannah Miller, a student at Maple River High School.
* Ciara Sandborg, a student at Maple River High School.

The semi-finalists will advance to a statewide competition. Winners, who will receive $500 scholarships, will be announced May 6 at the Gray Freshwater Center, home to the Freshwater Society, in Excelsior.

Now in its fifth year, the art contest encourages students to create works that reflect the relationship of water to art, the value of water and the threats water faces.

The three Elk River students worked under the supervision of their teacher, Rana Nestrud. Korhonen’s teacher is Geoff Welles.

Southwest-West Central art semi-finalists chosen

The four, who were chosen Wednesday, April 1, in a competition held in cooperation with the Southwest-West Central Service Cooperative are:
* Aaron Grafing, a student at Worthington High School
* Matt Gruenenwald, a student at Dawson-Boyd High School
* Rebecca Malecek, also a student at Dawson-Boyd High School
* Sean Solheim, a student at Murray County Central High School

The art contest encourages students to create works that reflect the relationship of water to life, its value and the threats it faces.
