Data Centers and Large Water Users

Groundwater sustainability through engagement and public policy

data center dropAs large water users pursue new developments in Minnesota and the Great Lakes region, Freshwater is a leading voice on the need for comprehensive planning and science-based policy to protect limited groundwater supplies.

Whether it’s data centers or other water-intensive industries like agriculture, water bottling, sustainable aviation fuel facilities or green hydrogen – we encourage more regional planning, cross-sector collaboration, transparency, community input, evaluation of impacts, and sustainable water use around new development projects.

(Watch) Data Centers: Good, Bad or Ugly

data centerThis video by Upstream Downriver Media features an interview with Michelle Stockness, Executive Director of Freshwater, and explores the issues surrounding data center development in Minnesota.

They discuss Minnesota’s first hyperscale data center, built by META, and the need for water efficiency and public transparency in new data center developments. The video also reflects on the historical impact people have had on the Mississippi River flowing through the Twin Cities.
