Water often has an emotional or symbolic value for countries. Water also touches every human life and is needed in a wide range of economic activities. Yet we share many of our water resources with our neighboring countries. Gary Doer, Canada’s 23rd representative to the United States of America will speak about the challenges and opportunities in crafting agreements on shared water resources, particularly the Red River Basin and the Great Lakes.
In addition to Ambassador Doer’s current position in Washington, he served as Premier of Manitoba for ten years. During that time, he worked extensively with many U.S. governors to enhance Canada-U.S. cooperation on trade, agriculture, water protection, climate change and renewable energy. In 2005, he was named by Business Week magazine as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change.

Shiva has contributed intellectually and through activist in the fields of intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics, genetic engineering. Shiva has also served as an adviser to governments in India and abroad as well as non governmental organizations, including the International Forum on Globalization, the Women’s Environment & Development Organization and the Third World Network.

Wetlands Summit 2010: Keeping Water on the Land

The goal is to bring together farmers, researchers, conservationists, students, and others interested in working collaboratively to protect water resources while ensuring productive farms. Presenters include Bruce Wilson and Gary Sands of the University of Minnesota’s Dept. of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering taking about agricultural drainage and strategies for conserving water in the soil and reducing the flow of nitrogen to surface waters. Other presenters include Warren Formo of the Minnesota Agricultural Water Resources Coalition, Martin Jaus, an organic dairy farmer from Sibley county, Tim Larson from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Tony Thompson, a corn and soybean farmer, and renowned expert on ecologically and economically sustainable farming from Windom.
The luncheon keynote speaker will be Jon Foley, Director of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment presenting “The Other Inconvenient Truth: A Global Challenge for Agriculture and the Environment” addressing the challenges of feeding a growing world population while protecting the land and water resources necessary to sustain the planet.

Metro Blooms – Raingarden Workshop and Design Studio (A & B)
This three-hour session combines the content of our A and B workshops. Participants will learn about watershed management, stormwater runoff, and raingarden basics including design, installation and maintenance of raingardens using native plants. In the second half of the session participants will receive hands-on assistance in planning a raingarden project.

Shoreland Conservation in Urban Settings

The original 1970 shoreland rules applied to just counties and not cities. Over time, the rules were amended to apply to both. However, the issues facing an urbanizing community or communities that have been largely built out or are undergoing redevelopment can be quite different from the typical “up north” Greenfield development people often associate with shoreland development. How can effective shoreland conservation be achieved in an urban setting? This half-day workshop provides information on new tools, how draft rules can be applied, local examples, much more.

Free Summer Teacher Workshop

The Freshwater Society and Orono Community Education invite teachers to Orono Environmental Camp on the Big Island in Lake Minnetonka. The workshop will focus on the Freshwater Society’s new Water Curriculum and is free and open to all teachers. There are four dates to choose from.
Journey to Big Island in the middle of Lake Minnetonka to learn about the new water curriculum developed by the Freshwater Society and experience teaching and learning outdoors. What better way to learn than to be come immersed in lessons which meet new MN Science Standards by participating in the Environmental Camp offered by Orono Community Education which
is now in its fifth year on Big Island.
You will travel by pontoon to the island with naturalist Marleane Callaghan and teacher Jake Westrom who will be leading this week focused on water issues and aquatic life. You will participate in hands on learning as students learn about water resources, aquatic life, water conservation, threats to our water supply and more. Water curriculum is designed for students in 4th and 5th grade, but can be adapted to lower or higher grades. All participants will receive a printed or CD copy .

In summer 2010, Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education (CGEE) will present its acclaimed Rivers Institute. The three-day, two-credit field-based course addresses the natural overlap between science processes and content and the skills of literacy. The Institute will explore how using rivers as a context can help your students meet specific education standards in science, engineering and literacy. All 3-8 grade teachers and middle school science and social studies teachers are eligible.

Minnehaha Creek Watershed District 4th Annual Creek Clean-Up

On Sunday, July 11 volunteers from across the metropolitan area, together with the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District are going to make a landmark attempt to collect 1000 pounds of trash from Minnehaha Creek and Lake Hiawatha.
The event will begin at 9:00 am for a pancake breakfast for the first 250 volunteers. After breakfast, the volunteers will “weigh-d” upstream to collect trash. At 12:00 noon, when all the trash in collected, the dumpster is filled, a “weigh-d” in will occur during a Leinenkugel’s sponsored barbeque picnic.
The event is located at Lake Hiawatha where it meets with Minnehaha Creek (East 46th Street and 28th Avenue, Minneapolis). The event is free and open to all. RSVP is required. For more information visit www.minnehahacreek.org and www.livegreentwincities.com.

World Water Monitoring Day

World Water Monitoring Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. Participants are encouraged to register their site and report their data before December 31 to be included in the Year in Review report. Test kits can be ordered online and resources are available as free downloads.
