People all across the country are being impacted by dirty water, whether it is through their drinking water or the stream running through their property that a farmer needs for his cattle. Many individuals experiencing health issues from contaminated water have no idea where to turn for help. To shed light on this water crisis, the Clean Water Network has embarked on an exciting project to produce a compendium that captures examples of where people are being impacted by water pollution and water scarcity. The result will be a new resource guide, Dirty Stories … about Water & Tales of Water Scarcity in America.

In summer 2010, Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education (CGEE) will present its acclaimed Rivers Institute. The three-day, two-credit field-based course addresses the natural overlap between science processes and content and the skills of literacy. The Institute will explore how using rivers as a context can help your students meet specific education standards in science, engineering and literacy. All 3-8 grade teachers and middle school science and social studies teachers are eligible.

Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshop

Join COSEE Great Lakes in a Great Lakes research cruise on Lake Michigan for a week, July 6-12, 2010. Work with scientists on limnological inquiry, and stop in ports for additional science learning. The workshop will offer first-hand exploration of Lake Michigan ecology, geology, geography, weather, and biogeochemical processes, with particular emphasis on human impacts and parallels between Great Lakes and ocean systems. World Water Monitoring Day

World Water Monitoring Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. Participants are encouraged to register their site and report their data before December 31 to be included in the Year in Review report. Test kits can be ordered online and resources are available as free downloads.
