Thanks for partying with — and supporting — Freshwater

The Freshwater Society extends its heartfelt thanks to all the people who made our Ice Out/Loon In party and fund-raiser a success. Visit Freshwater’s Facebook page to see a photo album from the party and to view video shot by Lake Minnetonka Patch. Or view an archive of photos shot by Lake Minnetonka Magazine.

Thanks to the approximately 200 people who attended the April 21 event and partied with us, generously supporting the Freshwater Society through their ticket purchases and their active participation in our raffles and a truly spectacular silent auction. Thanks to all the individuals and businesses that donated items for the raffles and the auction.

The Ice Out/Loon In event would not have been  possible without the hard work and enthusiasm of the volunteers who worked with Freshwater Board Chair Blyth Brookman and Development Director Diane Lynch to plan and put on the party.

Craig A. Cox lectures on farm policy and farm pollution

Craig A. Cox of the Environmental Working Group
Craig A. Cox

What are some farmers doing, things that many more could do, to prevent soil erosion and water pollution? What are some the trends in agriculture —  rapidly rising commodity prices, soaring land prices and cash rent payments to non-farmer land owners, a huge demand for corn for ethanol production — that threaten to increase pollution and erosion? And how should the federal Farm Bill be rewritten to encourage and reward conservation?

About 200 people turned out Feb. 24 to hear Craig A. Cox of the Environmental Working Group address those questions in a lecture at the University of Minnesota.

View video of the lecture, or listen to an audio-only version. Or download a PDF of slides from his presentation.

The lecture, titled “Taking the Pollution out of Agricultural Production,” was sponsored by the Freshwater Society and the university’s College of Biological Sciences.
